Volunteer Along the White River

Nestled in the heart of central Indiana, the White River flows through Hamilton and Marion Counties, providing not only a beautiful natural resource but also a vital ecosystem for our local communities. Along with the natural beauty and ecological significance, the White River offers a range of volunteer opportunities for individuals passionate about public lands, community engagement, arts and culture, and environmental stewardship.

We keep track of most volunteer activities on our events calendar, where you can use the Event Category filter to select “Volunteer & Service” to only see upcoming volunteering opportunities.

Whether a resident or a visitor, here are just a few ways to contribute to preserving and enhancing this waterway.

1. River Cleanups

One of the most impactful ways to volunteer along the White River is by participating in river cleanups. Organized by various local groups and environmental organizations, these events focus on removing litter and debris from the river and its surrounding areas. Volunteers work together to collect trash, recycle materials, and ensure the river remains a safe and clean habitat for wildlife. Most occur along the riverbanks, but a few are canoe-based!

The two main organizations that host clean ups are Friends of the White River and the White River Alliance. The City of Fishers also has a White River Cleanup Steward program that is an on-demand volunteer program.

2. Water Quality Monitoring

Volunteers play a crucial role in monitoring the health of the White River. By participating in water quality monitoring programs, you can collect data on various environmental indicators. This information is vital for identifying pollution sources, tracking changes in water quality, and advocating for policies that protect the river.

And the best thing? You don’t need to be an expert! The White River Alliance’s River Assessment Field Teams (RAFT) are citizen science opportunities. They’ll train you and provide all the equipment you need!

3. Art & Culture

Have some expertise in horticulture or animal care? Maybe you’re a connoisseur of art or history, or even interested in reenacting life from a by-gone era. Many of the museums along the White River thrive because of the countless volunteers they welcome each year. Check out these river partners for these sorts of volunteer opportunities:

4. Habitat Restoration

Restoring natural habitats along the White River is essential for maintaining biodiversity and supporting local wildlife. Volunteers can assist with planting native vegetation, removing invasive species, and constructing habitats for fish. These efforts help create a healthier and more resilient ecosystem.

In Indy reach out to Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and in Hamilton County connect with the Hamilton County Invasives Partnership and Hamilton County Parks & Recreation. Central Indiana Land Trust operates in both counties.

5. Educational Programs

Friends of the White River’s River School program turns the river into an environmental classroom for students, civic leaders, and other partners. Volunteer guides pilot rafts while sharing information and engaging people in a first-hand look at the river.

6. Recreational Activity Support

The parks along the White River are a popular spot for recreational activities like kayaking, fishing, hiking, family picnics, and playground time. Volunteers can help maintain trails, clean up recreational areas, and assist with events that promote outdoor activities. Supporting these efforts not only enhances the community’s enjoyment of the river but also fosters a greater appreciation for its natural beauty.
