Winter by the White River

Quiet Beauty Along the River

As the air grows crisp and the river trails quiet, the White River invites you to greet winter in new ways. Nature lovers can bundle up for peaceful walks at Holliday Park, Potter’s Bridge Park, or Forest Park, where the bare trees frame dramatic views of the river and moments of quiet often lead to surprise wildlife sightings. These trails offer the perfect chance to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with nature during the colder months.

Holiday Magic in Hamilton County

Winter in Central Indiana is a season of tradition and wonder, and in the White Riverway, there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate.

At Conner Prairie, the season begins on November 8 with the Holiday Heritage Market, where handcrafted goods, old-fashioned treats, and timeless holiday charm fill the air. Later in November and December, don’t miss A Merry Prairie Holiday, or enjoy a classic Breakfast with Santa, both beloved traditions that capture the heart of the holidays.

In Noblesville, climb aboard the Nickel Plate Express for themed winter train rides, including the beloved Reindeer Express, starting November 15th. This magical, family-friendly journey begins at Hobbs Station in Forest Park, and features hot chocolate, carols and a visit from Santa.

Looking for a more adult experience? Get your tickets for the Murder at the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party on December 17th and 18th, or Ho Ho Homicide Express on December 3rd, 4th, 10th or 11th. Both train rides are sure to provide you with a delicious dinner, and an unforgettable mix of mystery, laughter and holiday cheer.

Downtown Noblesville comes alive during the first weekend of December for the festive Deck the Downtown Weekend. Lights, local shops, and community celebrations fill the historic square with holiday cheer. On December 6th, don’t miss the special Holiday Market at Federal Hill Commons and finish the day off by watching the Holiday in Lights Parade through the quaint historic downtown square.

Seasonal Traditions in Indianapolis

In Indianapolis, families can continue the magic at Christmas at the Zoo from November 22 – January 4, where twinkling lights, festive animal exhibits, and cozy seasonal snacks create an unforgettable experience.

For another dazzling night, stroll through Winterlights at Newfields from November 28 – January 4, where millions of glowing bulbs transform the gardens into a dreamlike wonderland of color and light. Winterlights has multiple special days of celebration in collaboration with local partners:

  • On December 15th, join the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis for Latkes and Lights, a special Chanukah celebration at Newfields Winterlights.
  • On December 16th, join Arte Mexicano en Indiana at Winterlights for an evening celebrating Las Posadas

You won’t believe how many holiday events are happening at the Indiana State Museum! First, experience the joy of Celebration Crossing, starting with Opening Day on November 28th, when Santa makes his grand entrance by helicopter on the front lawn of the museum! Then of course your kids will need some more time with jolly old Saint Nick, so be sure to visit again for Breakfast with Santa in the Great Hall or in the fancy LS Ayres Tea Room or during the Snowflake Pajama Party.

Just down the street at the Eiteljorg Museum, your family will not want to miss the wonder of Jingle Rails, the Great Western Adventure. This wondrous model train display features eight G-scale trains traveling through spectacular landscapes and past famous landmarks of Indianapolis and the American West. For those who want a more peaceful experience, check out the inclusive Sensory Friendly Morning where the museum will provide a calm and welcoming environment and sensory-friendly resources to ensure an enjoyable visit for all.

Arts and Culture in Full Glow

For a day surrounded by art and inspiration, Free First Thursday at Newfields offers complimentary admission to the museum’s galleries and exhibitions, making it an ideal outing for cozy afternoons indoors. The arts and culture scene also shines bright during winter.

Those looking for hands-on creativity can join the Hand Drum Workshop with Artist in Residence David Martin at the Eiteljorg Museum on November 22. David is a Pokagon Band Potawatomi and will be teaching attendees how to make a hand drum.

Wondering where you will find the perfect gift for your art-loving aunt? At the Winter Art Sale of course! Make your way to the Indianapolis Art Center on Saturday, December 6, and Saturday, December 13, to find one-of-a-kind artwork, refreshments, and holiday cheer.

Outdoor Adventures and River Escapes

Outdoor fun doesn’t stop when the temperature drops. Families can glide across the ice at the Federal Hill Commons Ice Plaza in Noblesville or explore the Holliday Park Ice Rink. For winter thrill-seekers, the Koteewi Run Seasonal Slopes offer snow tubing adventures perfect for families. Whether snapping photos of a frosty landscape or taking a brisk walk under a pale winter sky, these parks provide refreshing ways to experience the river’s year-round beauty.

Giving Back

The White Riverway also offers meaningful ways to give back. Community members can volunteer for a White River Winter Clean-Up to help protect and preserve the natural ecosystem, or participate in RAFT’s citizen science program, where volunteers monitor water quality and learn firsthand about local conservation efforts.

Learn some new skills and protect riverside ecosystems by lending a hand at the Invasive Plant Removal on November 22nd at Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Park

Another fun way to support community causes is by jogging through White River State Park on December 6th for the Jingle Bell Run, a spirited event blending fitness, fun, and philanthropy.
